Domik Ptashki

Due to the monotonous lifestyle and lack of sustainable interaction with Nature, a person lives in a state of constant breakdown and internal dissatisfaction, which does not allow him to enjoy life to the fullest. It can be fixed by expanding borders of perception and gaining new experience of Human-Nature interaction. Need to design an opportunity to try on the ornithologist role by observing and taking care of birds.

Why birds? Birds protect the environment from insect pests; their singing gives a person pleasure, peace and beneficial effects on his mental health. By interacting with birds, human can feel the unity with Nature. The birdhouse design is close to a natural hollow, and its round shape reduces the impact of rain, snow and wind. The inlet hole was reinforced to protect birds from predators. Due to the low center of gravity, it can be securely fastened between branches without damaging a tree.

design process
Using the principles of design thinking, the project team moved away from designing a traditional birdhouse. It was studied the ideal nesting places for birds in nature; searched for successful examples of artificial birdhouses; interviewed the ornithologist, PhD, senior researcher at Zhiguli Reserve Galina Lebedeva.

The main difficulty was to find a balance in the design. On the one hand, a product should be as close as possible to natural habitats of birds, it should be safe for the environment, do not have bright colors and smells. On the other hand, it must have a stable structure to withstand climatic changes and extreme temperatures from -30℃ to +30℃. Moreover, the design should be attractive and easy to maintain for people.
Domik Ptashki is collapsible; it is better to remove and clean it at the end of the season, so next year the bird settles there again.
Where to hang the birdhouse?
Place Domik Ptashki in the garden, in the nearest grove or park. Choose a quieter place. Mount it at a height of at least 2 - 3 m from the ground, and 15 - 20 m from each other. Each bird family has its own permanent territory where it eats, rests, and nestlings. If the bird families do not have enough territory, they will be at enmity with each other.

The best period for installation is autumn, not spring, as many people think. In the spring, such a house does not smell of novelty and settle faster.
How to hang the birdhouse?
Domik Ptashki needs to be placed among thick branches of a tree. If a tree of suitable height and thickness cannot be found, then a long pole can be installed to fix the birdhouse using a wicker basket or a metal grip on top. Be careful, the construction must be securely fastened. The bird will accurately determine the quality of the building and will not expose itself and the chicks to danger.
How to orient the birdhouse?
To understand how to orient a birdhouse, you need to determine the climatic features of your region. If you have a warm climate – Domik Ptashki needs to be hidden from direct sunlight to protect the chicks from overheating. In a cold region, the house is oriented towards the sunny side. Entrance to the birdhouse better leaning forward slightly, this will protect it from getting snow and rain inside, and it will be easier for chicks to get out from such a house.
How to prepare for next season?
You should make it a rule to clean Domik Ptashki every year. After the birds left their house, it must be removed, opened, cleaned of contents, scald the inside with boiling water or treated with a solution of potassium permanganate to remove parasites.

If a crack appears on the birdhouse, do not rush to close it yourself, the birds will repair small cracks themselves. If you decide to restore the house, use only natural materials: tow, wood, clay or natural wax. The house should be repaired only outside. Do not use glue, paint and other chemicals to repair, this can scare away birds.
